Organization Dues Ownership Policy

Introduction

The question has arisen as to the ownership of membership dues.

Discussion

When an MnGFOA member changes jobs, the question has arisen as to whether the member or the organization that paid for the membership continues as the member. Because, the membership in MnGFOA has been listed under the name, it makes sense that the membership would transfer with the member. And, MnGFOA does not necessarily know who paid the dues, this also supports considering the membership in the name of the member.
Issues will arise at the time the member changes positions, such as mailing address changes and classification changes. It will be necessary for the member to notify the organization of an address change.

Recommendation

It is recommended that the Membership in MnGFOA remain with the individual rather than the organization. Be it further recommended that the individual shall notify the organization of the change so the membership information and mailing address can be updated. Additionally, if there is a change in classification, no further dues shall be assessed for the remainder of the year in which the dues were paid, nor any refunds made.

Action Taken

Recommendation was approved at the August 15, 2001 Executive Board meeting.
